Sarah Stewart Jefferson was born on September 6, 1941, in Richmond, Virginia, to Wilbur Stewart, Sr and Sarah Chatman Stewart. The youngest of five children, she passed away on November 28, 2025.

Sarah’s formative years were spent on Randolph Street, where her spirit blossomed. She pursued her education with vigor at Maggie Walker High School and later at Virginia Union University, both beloved institutions in her hometown. After dedicating three decades of her life to the Richmond Public School system as an administrative assistant, Sarah retired, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and service.A lifelong member of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Sarah embraced community and faith until she relocated to Ashburn, VA. There, she found great joy in nurturing the lives of her two beloved grandchildren, Matthew and Lauren, sharing with them the invaluable lessons and love that defined her own life.Sarah had a passion for following professional tennis and enjoyed the thrill of shopping, yet it was her fierce dedication as a protector and provider that truly defined her. She exemplified strength in every aspect of her life, inspiring those around her to rise above challenges and cherish the bonds of family and friendship.She is survived by her children, Thomas (Tara) and Joseph Jefferson; her loving sisters, Marian Griffin, Jean Scott, and Rose Hayes-Royster; her treasured grandchildren, Matthew and Lauren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and a wide circle of friends who will forever miss her warmth and kindness.As we remember Sarah Stewart Jefferson, let us celebrate the rich tapestry of her life, marked by love, resilience, and an unwavering spirit that will echo in the hearts of many for years to come. Her legacy is a profound testament to a life defined by strength, selflessness, and unconditional love. The qualities of a provider, protector, fighter and a person of immense compassion are deeply intertwined in the role of a mother which shapes the foundation of a family and community.
