Sheilah deValia Hurt, beloved mother, wife, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2026, in Silver Spring, Maryland. She was born on April 5, 1942, in New York City and adopted by Joseph Xavier Conroy and Margaret Orf Conroy, who both preceded her in death.

Throughout her 84 years, Sheilah touched many lives with her warmth, creativity, and unwavering devotion to her family and community. She built a distinguished career as an interior designer, leaving her mark on spaces through her attention to detail and deep appreciation of beauty. Later in her professional life, Sheilah served as a purchaser for the Maryland-National Capital Park Police, where her conscientiousness and dedication were greatly valued until her retirement.

Sheilah's vibrant spirit was matched by her passion for the arts and creative pursuits. She found joy in dancing, needlework, and, fittingly, in her ongoing love for interior design. These hobbies brought her peace and allowed her to share her talents with family and friends, whether through a beautifully crafted home or a lovingly stitched piece of needlework.

Sheilah’s greatest legacy, however, remains the love she shared with her family. She is survived by her devoted husband, David Sorrels Hurt; her loving sons, David Joseph Dixon and Ralph Briell Dixon, Jr.; and her cherished granddaughter, Lindsey Taylor Dixon. Their lives are indelibly marked by her wisdom, encouragement, and unconditional love.

As her family remembers Sheilah, they carry forward the gifts of her creativity, kindness, and unwavering commitment to those she held dear. Though she is deeply missed, her light endures in the memories she created, and in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.

The family wishes to thank Opper Chiweshe and the staff of Sweetbriar Hills Home for the wonderful care they provided Sheilah during the last months of her life.  A memorial gathering for Sheilah will be announced at a later date.
