Shomari Dakota
Edwards
March 17, 2001 – September 28, 2025
Shomari Dakota “Mari” Edwards, 24, of Washington, D.C., passed away on September 28, 2025, at George Washington Hospital. Born on March 17, 2001, Shomari spent her entire life in the city she loved, surrounded by family and friends who cherished her radiant spirit.
Shomari was known as somewhat of a local celebrity among her peers. She had a vibrant passion for music, dance, fashion, and sports such as basketball and cheerleading. Her charisma and bright personality drew people in, and her loyalty to those she loved made her an irreplaceable friend. She possessed a deep compassion and emotional depth that rivaled the ocean itself, and her smile and laughter lit up every room she entered.
On September 10, 2019, Shomari welcomed her greatest joy, her son, with whom she shared an unbreakable bond. Her love for him was boundless, giving, plentiful, and everlasting. In recent months, she lived with her grandmother, where they shared countless moments of laughter, late-night conversations, and joyful meals, always punctuated by her signature phrase: “This is some good stuff.”
Shomari is survived by her beloved son, her mother, her sister, her grandmother, her grandfather, her aunt, her uncle, and many cousins. She was preceded in death by other cherished loved ones who welcomed her with open arms.
A private service for family will be held on October 2, followed by a public vigil on October 3 at 7:00 p.m. for all who wish to honor and remember her.
Shomari’s light, much like the moon, will continue to shine through the memories she leaves behind—guiding and inspiring all who knew and loved her.
