Steve Gregory O’Neil, a man whose very presence radiated warmth and an unyielding spirit, passed away on May 4, 2026, in Arlington, Virginia. Born on May 29, 1958, in Bethesda, Maryland, Steve’s life was a tapestry woven with dedication, laughter, and an enduring love for family and country.

Steve’s early years were marked by a fierce passion for baseball, a sport that shaped his character and left an indelible mark on those who knew him. As a youthful pitcher on the mounds of St. John’s College High School and Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC, his fiery presence was matched only by his skill. Those days spent under the sun, gripping the ball with determination, were the prelude to a life that would encompass both service and profound leadership.

Answering the call to serve his country, Steve enlisted in the United States Army in May 1983. For three years until May 1986, he served as a Private First Class Russian Interrogator during the tense years of the Cold War. His tours took him across the nation—from Fort Bragg in North Carolina to the mysterious woods of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; from the vibrant cityscape near Fort Gordon, Georgia; all the way to the sun-soaked Presidio of Monterrey in California. In every post, he carried the weight of his duty solemnly, bridging the silent battles with sharp intellect and unwavering resolve.

Returning to civilian life, Steve channeled his extraordinary work ethic into a career spanning the Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland regions. As a manager at various Goodyear and Firestone Auto Care shops, he rose swiftly through ranks, admired not only for his skillful leadership but for the genuine kindness he extended to all around him. Long hours—often 80 to 90 a week—did not deter him; rather, they bore witness to a man whose passion and dedication were boundless. Co-workers remember him as a beloved figure, a pillar of strength and wit whose booming laugh could lift spirits even in the toughest of times.

Yet, beyond the tire shops and hard work, Steve’s true legacy shines most brightly in the circle of those he cherished. Husband to Wendy O’Neil and devoted father to sons Zac, Luke, and Caleb, Steve’s life revolved around his family. With daughter-in-law Jonelle Mitchell and Nicole O’Neil completing this intimate portrait, the bonds he nurtured were steadfast and profound. He was, above all else, a loving father and husband—his greatest accomplishments found not in titles or ranks, but in the unbreakable ties of affection and support he wove with those closest to him.

In quieter moments, Steve embraced the simple joys that fed his soul. An avid baseball fan, he often harked back to the thrill of watching Washington Senators games in his childhood, later delighting in the return of the Washington Nationals to DC. Fishing was another pursuit that brought him peace, whether patiently casting a line on a local lake or chasing elusive Mahi Mahi in the Atlantic. Though the fish may have eluded him more than they found his bait, Steve’s love for the water was never diminished. Evenings spent cracking fresh Maryland blue crabs with friends and family remain some of his most treasured memories—times filled with laughter, shared stories, and the taste of the sea.

Steve’s warmth was legendary. He was the kind of man who welcomed everyone into his world with open arms, carrying kindness in his heart and humor ready at the tip of his tongue. His authenticity, generosity, and infectious laughter remain etched in the minds and souls of all who knew him. Though his parents, Paul O’Neil and Mary Ellen Gaffney, have preceded him in death, their memories live on in Steve’s enduring spirit.

Steve Gregory O’Neil’s journey was one of profound service, tireless dedication, and a ceaseless love for those who walked beside him. His story is etched not only in the history of his career and service but most vividly in the hearts of his family and friends—where his legacy will forever echo in laughter, love, and unbreakable bonds.
