In Loving Memory of Steven Nakoa Brown

It is with profound sadness that the Brown family announces the passing of their beloved son, Steven Nakoa Brown, who left this world on January 28, 2025. Nakoa's presence was truly remarkable—when he was with you, he was fully present, leaving a lasting impact on everyone he met. Friends and family cherished Nakoa for his kindness, gentleness, compassion, intelligence, and quiet demeanor. He would do whatever was within his capacity to comfort and support those in need, always willing to help others in times of vulnerability.

From a young age, Nakoa struggled with an inner turmoil that prevented him from seeing the incredible qualities we all admired in him. Despite his numerous successes, therapy sessions, achievements, and the praise he received, he couldn't recognize his true worth and angelic nature. Anxiety's grip can be cruel and unyielding. At the age of 22, Nakoa felt overwhelmed by the weight of the world and made the heartbreaking decision to end his life in the family home, where he had spent 21 years surrounded by love and acceptance. His family feels profoundly enriched for having had him in their lives, and will miss him immensely.

Nakoa is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Roy Gillia and Leo Brown. He is survived by his parents, Jeffrey and Tivah (Beth); his sister, Leah; his brother, Alex; and his grandmothers, Doris Brown and Mary Ruth Shuptrine. He also leaves behind many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The family wishes to honor Nakoa's birth family and hold their love in his memory. He is also preceded in death by his birth grandmother, Missenah Poolaw-Dufrene. He is survived by his birthparents, John and Berdena (Angel) Rodriguez; siblings, Joseph Miller, Tereasa, Nala, Criscencio and Matthew Rodriguez, and R.G.; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; his grandparents, John and Maria Rodriguez, and Berkman Dufrene; and his great-great-grandfather, Pascal Cleatus Poolaw, the most decorated Native American soldier in U.S. history.

The family will spread Nakoa's ashes among his loving birth family's ancestors in Oklahoma. A private Celebration Of Life will be held in the family's Virginia home.

Nakoa's legacy of kindness, compassion, and support will forever be remembered. May his memory be a blessing.
