Listen to Obituary

Thai Nguyen, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and servant of the Lord, passed away on August 26, 2025, in Locust Grove, Virginia, at the age of 78. Born on August 1946, in Vietnam, Thai’s life was a testament to unwavering faith, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to his family and community.

From a young age, Thai dedicated himself to the service of others. He served with honor in the South Vietnamese Army as a chaplain, achieving the rank of Second Lieutenant and fulfilling the role of Deputy Chief of the Evangelical Chaplaincy Office of the Army, I Corps, in Danang, Vietnam. His military service left an indelible mark on his life, and he often shared stories from his time in the Vietnam War, including his experiences in post-war re-education camps. These stories were moments of laughter and faith-filled reflection that he cherished, blending humor with lessons of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. After his service, he continued his journey as an evangelist and later became an ordained pastor in the United States.

Thai was not only dedicated to his spiritual calling but also invested in the lives of his loved ones. His children fondly remember the simple yet profound moments spent together. They recall the joy of giving him piggyback rides and playing hairdresser, something that always brought laughter and a brightened spirit to their father's day. As a father, he took pride in preparing lunches for his son during his time at George Mason University, and he devoted himself to taking his children and grandchildren to their activities, including weekly drum lessons.

His grandchildren were treated to endless love and affection, as he drove them to school, the bus stop, and various outings to Dollar Tree, Walmart and Costco. Sweet treats were always on offer to the grandchildren, along with generous helpings of honey, which he loved to share with everyone around him. His eldest son cherishes the memory of a joyful car ride to church, grateful for the time spent with his father, who always made sure his family felt valued and loved. His eldest son kissed him on the cheek, told him he loves him, and dad Thai responded, "I love you a lot, my son." His second son loves the childhood memories he had with dad Thai, in which dad Thai taught him the Word of God.

Thai's warmth extended beyond his immediate family, reaching out to friends and the community. He had a unique way of connecting with people, often introducing them to Jesus Christ through his stories and acts of kindness. His personality shone brightly; he was known for his infectious laughter, and he took delight in sharing humorous anecdotes, often repeating the Chinese phrases his college roommates taught him, in a lighthearted manner that kept those around him smiling.

In addition to his pastoral work, Thai enjoyed several hobbies, including playing ping-pong, Chinese chess, swimming, singing, and walking. His loving spirit and sense of humor created a welcoming environment for all, where he extended a helping hand whenever possible.

Thai Nguyen is survived by his devoted wife, Thien-Thu, and his five children, with their respective spouses. He leaves a legacy of love through his seven grandchildren, all of whom will carry his memories in their hearts.

Thai was preceded in death by his father, Tieu Nguyen; his mother, Phuoc Vo; and two sisters, Phuoc Nguyen and Loc Nguyen.

A viewing will be held on September 6, 2025, at the First Vietnamese-American UMC in Arlington, Virginia, followed by a funeral service at the same location. He will be laid to rest at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home & Cemetery in Brentwood, Maryland.

As we remember Thai, we honor a life rich with faith, generous spirit, and a deep love for family. His legacy will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who knew him, reminding us all of the value of laughter, service, and unwavering love.
