Theodore Andrew Speleos, known affectionately as Teddy, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2026, in Fairfax, Virginia, with family by his side. Born on May 1, 1951, in Washington, DC. He held a quiet faith in prayer, which helped him face challenging times in his life. He inherently believed in healing through prayer. Teddy’s life was a testament to the power of music and its profound influence on both those who heard it and those who played it.

From a young age, Teddy exhibited an extraordinary gift for music, possessing the rare talent to play by ear. Without formal training, he taught himself to master the guitar, piano, and his own voice, embarking on a lifelong journey as a musician. In the 1960's, Teddy's passion carried through various bands and musical collaborations, particularly notable during his time in Woodstock and New York City, where he played regularly at the historic Cafe Wha?. His artistry, talent, and dedication left an indelible mark on many legendary music icons of the era, contributing to the vibrant and evolving folk and rock music scenes in which he was so deeply embedded. His manager once honored him with a guitar that had belonged to Jimi Hendrix, a symbol of reverence for Teddy’s unique place in the world of music.

Teddy’s legacy extends beyond his professional achievements. He is survived by his son Jesse Speleos and daughter, Shenandoah Speleos. He is also survived by his brother William Speleos and sister, Maria Linden. His family circle includes five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two nieces, three nephews, and many cousins, all of whom were a joy to him.

Teddy was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Catherine Katinas Speleos Canard, and his father, Andrew Theodore Speleos. He also mourned the earlier loss of his brother John George Speleos and sons Shannon Speleos and Shilough Hopwood. His faith in God and prayer carried him through each loss.

Throughout his life, Teddy touched many with his music, kindness and politeness. His enduring influence as a musician will continue to resonate deeply with those who knew him. As we remember Theodore Andrew Speleos, we celebrate a man whose melodies and memories will forever live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and followers. May his memory be eternal!
