Thomas “Tom” Gerard Jones, 65, passed away on June 23, 2026 following health complications.

Born on March 15, 1961, in Cooperstown, New York, Thomas was raised in Cobleskill, where he developed the values of hard work, loyalty, and compassion that would guide him throughout his life.

Thomas proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 20 years, retiring with the rank of Information Systems Technician First Class (IT1/E-6). Throughout his distinguished military career, he earned numerous awards and commendations, including the Navy Achievement Medal, four Meritorious Unit Commendations, the Good Conduct Award (Fourth Award), the National Defense Service Medal, two Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, two Navy Overseas Service Ribbons, the Navy Recruiting Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, the Eighth Gold Wreath Award, and the Navy Expert Pistol Medal. His military service reflected his unwavering dedication, professionalism, and commitment to those with whom he served.

Beyond his military accomplishments, Thomas was best known for the joy he brought to others. He had a wonderful sense of humor and could brighten any room with one of his jokes. He especially loved karaoke and never missed an opportunity to sing, laugh, and encourage others to join in. Whether surrounded by family, friends, or new acquaintances, Thomas had a gift for making people feel welcome. His laughter was contagious, and his generous heart left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Thomas is survived by his son, Michael Jones (and mother Janet Jones), and his siblings: Kathy Bean (Dennis) of Cobleskill, New York; Amanda Slater of Cobleskill, New York; Rebecca Qualls (Kenny) of Cookeville, Tennessee; Forrest Satchell of Los Angeles, California; Steven Garreau (Lynda) of Summit, New York; Brian Garreau (Caroline) of Schenectady, New York; Alonzo O'Dell (Violet) of Warnerville, New York; Melissa Morris (Everett) of Jonesboro, Georgia; and Nadene Garreau (Michael Wrubel) of Cobleskill, New York. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Thomas was preceded in death by both his parents, Frank Joseph and Dorothy Mae (Johnson)Garreau; Eldest sister, Connie Ann (Jones) Loyd; Youngest brother, Robert Charles Garreau and his nephew, Tyler Ryan Shoemaker.

A graveside interment service for Thomas will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Cobleskill Rural Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest alongside his beloved parents. The time of the service will be announced at a later date. Military honors will be presented in recognition of Thomas’s 20 years of dedicated service to the United States Navy.

Following the military honors, a celebration of life will be held at a time and location to be announced. Family and friends will gather to share memories, laughter, and stories honoring the life of a man who brought joy and kindness to so many.

Thomas's life was defined by service, loyalty, laughter, and love. Whether wearing the uniform of his country or sharing a joke with those he loved, he lived with honor and kindness. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched, the memories he created, and the love he shared so freely.
