Timothy Harold McGinn

Timothy Harold McGinn, age 78 and longtime resident of Waterford, VA, passed away on May 7, 2026, after complications from cancer.

Tim was born on Sept. 20, 1947, to Luke McGinn and Phyllis Hayes in Hackensack, NJ. After graduating from Hackensack High School in 1966, he went on to study at the University of Omaha. When he was 20 years old, he was drafted into the Vietnam War and volunteered for the U.S. Army Special Forces. Tim was a radio operator and served from 1968-1971 in the Special Forces Detachment B-36 (3rd Mobile Strike Force Command) based in Long Hai.

After Vietnam, Tim completed his BA in 2 1/2yrs on the G.I. Bill while supporting himself with part time work. While working for a decade as a carpenter and gathering various skills, he was inspired to begin his lifetime work and launched his own general contracting business, T.H. McGinn and Co. Tim continued to hone his knowledge and craftsmanship while building and restoring many new and existing homes in Loudoun County and Northern Virginia. His experience and interest in historical buildings and home renovations led him to pursue a Masters in Historic Preservation from Goucher College in 2004. Tim provided frequent consultation services over the years to the Waterford Foundation on the restoration and preservation of historic buildings in the village. Working meticulously to perfect and share his sensibilities, Tim oversaw projects preserving many historical homes while inspiring others to do the same.

A kindhearted and dependable friend and father, Tim was always encouraging and hopeful. With his own sense of levity and wit, he appreciated simplicity in life, while also happy to share in moments of deep, meaningful conversation. Whether reflecting on life and family, the beautiful town he lived in, his beloved cats over the years, or stories of racing his Austin Mini Cooper, he had a unique spirit, smile and laugh that will be missed.

Tim’s wife and best friend of 40 years, Antonia McGinn (Walker), passed away five weeks after him. He leaves behind his children: stepdaughter Alexandria Walker and her husband Scott Matson and their children Finn and Soren (of Takoma Park, MD); stepdaughter Aubrey Walker and her husband Kevin Allgood (of Powhatan, VA); and daughter Katherine McGinn and her husband Andy Farkas and their children Ena, Juno and Lyra (of Asheville, NC); and his sister, Patricia Feoranz and her husband Frank Feoranz (of Bonita Springs, FL). He is preceded in death by his brother, Thomas McGinn.

A celebration of life for Tim and Antonia will be held in Waterford, VA on August 15, 2026, from 2-4pm at the Waterford Old School Auditorium.

In lieu of flowers, any donations in honor of Tim can be made to the Waterford Foundation, the Vietnam Veterans of America or Alex’s Lemonade Stand (Foundation for Childhood Cancer).
