Wendell J. Bright, 87, of Falls Church, Virginia, died peacefully on March 25, 2026, in Fairfax Hospital surrounded with the comfort and care of loved ones.

Born in Fruithurst, Alabama, Wendell spent his childhood growing up in very rural Alabama and Georgia with an older brother, Emory, and an older sister, Orbit, known as Orbie. Both preceded him in death.

Wendell worked for the USPS for 64 years and reluctantly retired at the age of 84. For many years he worked the third shift in the Friendship Heights Post Office and very rarely missed a day of work, even being awarded a certificate for accruing more than 2,000 hours of sick leave.

His annual vegetable garden was legendary, and Wendell loved to share his bounty of fresh tomatoes, green beans, okra, sweet peppers and peaches with his neighbors. His generosity and kindness along with his unique outlook on life made him a neighborhood icon. Wendell loved to visit with all the local dogs out on a walk and knew which ones were friendly and those that were not. He will be deeply missed.

Neighbors are planning a celebration of life in the near future.
