William Bane
Naff
August 23, 1946 – May 14, 2026
William Bane Naff, known affectionately as Bill, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at The View in Alexandria, Virginia. He was 79 years old. Born on August 23, 1946, in Washington County, Virginia, Bill’s life was marked by service, talent, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.
Bill was a member of the last graduating class from Liberty Hall in Lodi, Virginia, in 1964. Upon completing his education, he moved to Washington, D.C., to begin his professional journey. His path soon took him into military service when he was drafted into the Army. Stationed in Germany and throughout Europe during his deployment, Bill’s time in the service deeply influenced his perspective and experiences. Even after his military career had concluded, he frequently returned to Germany for extended visits, maintaining a connection to the people and places that had become meaningful to him.
Following his service, Bill devoted his career to government work in Washington, D.C. In addition, he shared his knowledge and passion for language by teaching English as a second language to Korean students, helping many find their voice and confidence in a new language.
A remarkable self-taught pianist, Bill possessed the rare gift of playing by ear. Music was one of his many talents, quietly shared only with a fortunate few who happened to hear him play. Those moments, often unplanned and unseen, were unforgettable blessings—evidence of a deeply artistic and sensitive soul.
Bill was also known for his meticulous nature, which extended to every aspect of his life. Whether at home or in his career, he maintained his spaces with care and precision, always ensuring things were kept in perfect order. His attention to detail reflected his respect for his surroundings and the importance he placed on responsibility.
Family was a central pillar in Bill’s life. He kept close watch over the lives and milestones of those he cherished, maintaining strong bonds even across distances. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gladys Emmaline Wilson Naff Freeman; his father, Elmo Bane Naff; and his sisters, Kathleen Naff McAbee of South Carolina and Eloise Naff McCall of Virginia. Also gone before him was his special furry companion, Rudy, whose presence brought warmth and joy to his later years.
Those who survive Bill include his brothers: James Millard Naff of Indiana; Donald Mark Lusk of Michigan; and Edwin Leroy Naff and his wife, Phyllis, of Chilhowie, Virginia. Several nieces, nephews, special friends, and neighbors also carry forward his memory and the impact he had on their lives.
In accordance with Bill’s wishes, there will be no formal services. His final resting place will be at Kelly’s Chapel Cemetery in Glade Spring, Virginia, a fitting homage to a man whose roots were deeply planted in this region.
William Bane Naff’s life was one of quiet strength, disciplined dedication, and gentle artistry. He leaves behind a legacy of love and respect, touching all who knew him with grace and dignity.
