IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William Raymond
Sellers, Jr.
January 28, 1947 – October 26, 2025
William Raymond Sellers Jr., “Ray”, of Sterling, Virginia, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2025. He was 79 years old.
Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Ray was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and a career employee of the Department of Transportation, where he dedicated decades of service to supporting the nation’s infrastructure and transportation programs.
Ray was the devoted husband of the late Mary Frances Sellers. He is survived by his son, William Raymond Sellers III, daughter-in-law Erin, and his cherished grandchildren Liam, Eliot, Willa, and Lark—who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his brother Mark and was predeceased by his sister Susan. He is lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews.
Known for his sharp wit, intelligence, and curious mind, Ray had a deep appreciation for learning and technology. He was an early adopter of personal computers, a devoted fan of classical music, and a passionate photographer. He especially loved capturing the colors of fall along the Appalachian Mountains and often took road trips just to chase the perfect shot.
Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Ray graduated from Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn, Class of 1965, and went on to earn his degree from the University of Kansas, Class of 1971, where he remained a lifelong and passionate Kansas Jayhawk basketball fan. Ray proudly followed the team to NCAA tournament games across the country.
He loved the open road, long drives, and exploring new places — his cars often racked up over 200,000 miles, a badge of honor to him. He also had a fondness for the cold and the beauty of winter landscapes, always dreaming of Alaska until he learned it lacked air conditioning.
Funeral services will be held at a later date at Christ the Redeemer Church in Sterling, with a private burial to follow at Arlington National Cemetery for both Mary and Ray.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the National Kidney Foundation, the American Diabetes Association, the Good Shepherd Alliance, or a children’s charity of your choice.
